This verse in Matthew holds a simple yet very striking concept. It nudges right into our worrying hearts, drowning in thoughts about the small things in life, swimming in thoughts about how life will go on for tomorrow.
Truly, life is more than just the food we eat and the clothes we will wear. In the same way, life is more than just the ambition we want to achieve, the money we save in the bank and the ring we wear in our finger. If life was all about this, how meaningless it would be! Our stomachs will digest the food, our clothes wear out and new fashion comes in, others might get ahead of us in our careers, the bank may close up and the people we love will not always be with us.
Jesus commands us not to worry about our life. He was not merely suggesting but instructing us on how to live our daily lives. “Worry not,” He says. Not because we do not need such things but Jesus knew that our life does not revolve around this things.
Our life has much more meaning and purpose than these petty things. Jesus instructs us not to worry about our lives because the Father knows exactly what we need.
How freeing is this to know! Knowing that God knows what we need and will supply them according to the riches of His grace, we are then free to pursue after the things greater than our life, greater than our need for food and clothing. We are free to pursue and seek our absolute joy in Christ. That is all that matters! That is all that will last for eternity!
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33 NIV)
Do not worry! 😃
