In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. (Genesis 1:1-2 NIV)
The account of the Creation and the Fall of Man has been the theme of Shine Paoo’s January 2017 outreach. Held on Jan. 29 in the small town of Brgy. Paoo, Santa Maria, Laguna, the Aqua dgroup network has once again sought the kids whose hearts and lives were planted the seeds of God’s kingdom.
Starting off through praise and worship, the kids and the volunteers praised the Lord through singing and dancing. I personally was moved when the Filipino version of the “Salvation Poem” of the Superbook was sung. How stirring were the innocence and childlike faith of these children, singing about how Jesus died to give us new life so we can be called friends of God! After that, the youth were led to pray by one of the volunteers.
One of the highlights of this outreach was the use of a new medium to communicate and relay the Bible to the kids. Using the first and only Christian animated cartoon in the Philippines, Superbook, the story of creation, sin and God’s promise of redemption was presented to the children in an retentive and fresh way through Superbook’s In The Beginning series.
Superbook presents the timeless Bible stories in a fun and engaging way. Its main characters, Chris, Joy and Gizmo time travels back in time to a specific event captured in the Bible. Basic Bible lessons are easily remembered as the story weaves the characters’ emotions and actions into the message of the Scripture. You can learn more about Superbook here.
As always, the Lord has graciously provided for the materials needed such as DVD player and screen monitor. We have also seen how God worked by providing everything that we needed to accomplish His work. Though the January 2017 outreach was, by far, the smallest congreration in terms of the number of volunteers, we never felt not provided for by the Lord. Truly, God’s means cannot be measured by the quantity of the resources but by the grace and power He richly bestows.
The primary message of the outreach is to show that God loved us so much and He displayed the truth of this love through the following:
- God created us. In His omniscience, the Lord has created perfectly everything in the world. And He was not contented, He created man to enjoy and to steward over creation. Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Genesis 1:26 NIV). We were made in God’s own likeness to love Him and be loved by Him.
- God disciplines us. When Adam and Eve chose to disobey God, sin entered the world. As such, punishment was given to us by God. So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken (Genesis 3:23 NIV). Man would have to toil the ground just to get food. Women would have to endure the pains of child-bearing. We saw that every action we have has consequences. God’s love does not mean tolerance. God’s love disciplines.
- God saved us. God simply did not punished us for our disobedience but in His great love, He has made a way for us to be saved from our sinful selves. He promised a Savior. And He fulfilled this promise when Jesus Christ came from heaven to earth, died and rose again!
An activity was also done to engage the kids in the story of how the world was created. Then the children were assigned to breakout groups where the lesson was explained further.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light (Genesis 1:3 NIV). We saw how the hearts of the children were being changed and molded month after month. The smile on their faces simply reminds us of how the joy of the Lord overflows in our lives. Their expectant hearts make us more eager in reaching out to the lost, until Jesus comes.
